From the very first second of "The Wings of the Hydra", you know what this album is going to contain; hardcore vocals, melodic keyboards, catchy guitar riffs and an overall haunting atmosphere. Sean16August 31st, Originally written for Black Wind Metal. If you listen to "Arrival of the Darkest Queen" and "Lepaca Kliffoth", you can see that this is way more experimental than their previous album.

The title refers to the Qliphoth. Latest members reviews This is the first Therion album with no death metal vocals. The instrumentation is however noticeably more adventurous, with kepaca becoming ever more significant.

Male and female vocals combine against a heavy backdrop in a klifffoth which suffers only from its brevity.

The differences are many. You can begin to see the first signs of the band transforming itself with kliffotj occasional operatic backing vocal or classical sounding keyboard part here and there but they sound rather tentative and the production qualities are significantly lower.

Tiamat doesn't feature on this site but before they turned into a stale gothic metal act they created some interesting Sisters of Mercy on Pink Floyd dope albums.

The new songs feel less overloaded and more balanced, and give the melodies and vocals the time to unfold and become memorable. The latter is my favorite track. I was very impressed with my first Therion album "Deggial" and decided I would check out some tyerion the band's early history.

While Therion has recorded an impressive number of covers, those are usually relegated to bonus material, live performances or EPs. The rest of the album is equally dark and enchanting, with other standouts being the title track and "Evocation of Vovin". In terms of notable significant progressJohnsson finally dispenses with the growling,and makes a conscious attempt to sing melodically.

The progressiveness also displays interesting technical drumming patterns with highly melodic guitar riffs.

Another Swedish background singer and a German guitarist complete the list of invited musicians. Wings of the Hydra, Darkness Eve, and Melez are simple crushers serving as the last remnants of the dying style; Darkness Eve even featuring some of the best riffs of Therion's life.

It also contains a lot of keyboards and middle-eastern melodies.

For the final minute though it bursts into an exquisite instrumental passage. The pace of the songs is much faster with traditional speed-chugging guitar and galloping rhythms. Theriin pitch is the same as that of lepwca Therion, especially Symphony Masses, but this time around all the harshness has gone out of it.

TommyAMay 22nd, This is an all-over-the-place album which as a cohesive album is pretty weak, but there are plenty of excellent individual tracks on here making it a worthy listen.
